Job Description

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, provide 1:1 support for program participants with physical, mental and/or behavioural challenges to help integrate them into recreation programs.

All training hours are paid at minimum wage as outlined in the Employment Standards Act.

 

Responsibilities

v  Supervising participant

  • Provide guidance to participant
  • Assist with participation in all program activities/skills
  • Be a role model to participant
  • Encourage positive behaviours and facilitate behaviour modifications where necessary
  • Use fair and appropriate discipline techniques
  • Implement safety systems and consistently use as necessary (eg. Heads counts, meeting places, etc.)
  • Assist with toileting/changing as necessary

v  Behaviour Management

  • Read and understand the participant profile submitted by the parent/guardian when provided
  • Develop a plan for successfully supporting the child (ie. Reward systems, providing sufficient breaks, etc.) and adjust as necessary based on training and tools provided from full-time staff
  • Diffuse behavioural issues such as tantrums when needed
  • When the situation requires, use techniques acquired through training to prevent injury to participant and members of the public (eg. Body blocking, CPI, safety planning, etc.)

v  Enforce and follow City of Oshawa policies and procedures

  • Complete Public Accident/Incident Reports or Complaint/Enquiry Forms as required

v  Communication with parent/guardian, participant and staff

  • Prior to program start, collect information about the child they will be supporting to help make their week successful
  • Weekly verbal and/or written communication with the parent/guardian regarding the participant’s success and challenges
  • Use sign language or alternative communications methods with the participant depending on their needs
  • Communicate regularly with program instructors regarding the schedule of activities, adaptations required for specific activities.
  • Inform full-time staff of any incidents/accidents or participant behaviour issues
  • Promote participation, fair play and sportsmanship amongst participants

v  Other duties as assigned

 



Job Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Enrolled in post-secondary program in a related field is an asset (eg. Nursing, Personal Support Worker, Ontario College of Teachers, CPI, Behaviour Management Training, AODA training, Inclusive Recreation, and/etc.)
  • Completion of a leadership course is an asset (ie. Counsellor in Training, High School leadership courses, etc.)
  • Possess and keep current Standard First Aid/CPR ‘C’ qualifications 
  • Provide a current (within six months) Criminal Information Request prior to employment start date
  • Demonstrate good customer service and communication skills to deal effectively and courteously with staff and the general public; good interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings
  • Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
